When you start studying any career related to art, many life paths begin to make more sense. But many times those paths are totally different from the senses we had in mind.
The Dramatic Arts career at the Universidad de Chile offers a large number of methods for the practice of our working area, and with these methods I mean the ability to achieve a performance just as we want it. However, there are other deeper methods that seems to justify and force us to think what we do, what we act. It is in this practice of thinking when life enters in the game. Where we think about life.
Many classmates have become more related to this "practice of thinking" where not only theater has a voice, but also fields such as semiotics or sociology enter to dialogue with this art. Tensions are created between concepts, the ideas are dissolve and the points that we thought were clear in our lives begin to crumble step by step to make way to a new thought, much more critical, much more rational, and many times much more bleak.
What is acting without thinking about life?
Imitation. Nothing more than a formula to get to the same point.
Thinking about life makes us feel uncomfortable with it, thinking that not everything is black or white creates crisis in ourselves. Discovering the somber of life is not easy, to love a hated one or to hate a loved one collapses any principle. But not all is lost.
The theater and its practice makes us navigate those somber places, makes us understand what was so difficult for us to understand, makes us empathize with what we refused to empathize before. Being presents in theater makes us relate to life in a different way, in a way - perhaps - much more human. And, clearly, it is not easy to be human, the most difficult thing that we have had to do was relate to each other, understand each other, hate each other and love each other.
Finally, understanding the theatrical environment in this way, carries me to try to bring this same logic to the audience. Let us fill ourselves with hate and love, let us be accomplices of our feelings. May it cost us less and less to be more human.
